Arrived at a home in Summersville where the homeowner said the system had been running constantly and the power bill had jumped noticeably over the past two billing cycles without any equipment failures. Inspected the outdoor unit and found the condenser coil was heavily packed with cottonwood, dandelion seeds, and the fine dust that builds up in the mountain air around Summersville through early summer. Heat transfer was nearly zero and the system was working overtime trying to reject heat through a clogged coil. Cleaned the coil with a low-pressure rinse, inspected the capacitor and contactor while I had access, and confirmed the temperature split came back to where it should be during a full cooling cycle. Running efficient now and the next bill should reflect it.
Responded to a home in Summersville where the homeowner said the central AC had been making a loud rattling noise from the outdoor unit whenever it started up, loud enough that the neighbors had asked about it. Inspected the condenser fan assembly and found the fan motor mounting bolts had loosened over years of vibration, allowing the blade to wobble and strike the inside of the fan shroud during startup. Tightened and re-torqued the mounting hardware, checked the fan blade for any damage from the contact, and tested startup and full-speed operation through several cycles to confirm the rattling was completely gone. Quiet operation now, which matters a lot when you live close enough to hear your neighbor's AC running.
Ductless Mini-Split Installation: Installed a new ductless heating and cooling system in a finished bonus room above the garage that had been relying on portable units for temperature control. Mounted the indoor wall unit at the optimal height for airflow coverage, routed insulated refrigerant lines and low-voltage wiring through an exterior wall sleeve to the outdoor condenser, and tested both cooling and heating modes to verify quiet, efficient year-round operation.
