Responded to a home in Summersville where the homeowner said the central AC had been making a loud rattling noise from the outdoor unit whenever it started up, loud enough that the neighbors had asked about it. Inspected the condenser fan assembly and found the fan motor mounting bolts had loosened over years of vibration, allowing the blade to wobble and strike the inside of the fan shroud during startup. Tightened and re-torqued the mounting hardware, checked the fan blade for any damage from the contact, and tested startup and full-speed operation through several cycles to confirm the rattling was completely gone. Quiet operation now, which matters a lot when you live close enough to hear your neighbor's AC running.
